Zephyr "Signature Series" Metal Polishing Compounds (Solid Bars)
To achieve a true mirror shine, a good buffing wheel alone is not enough – you need the right polishing compound. Zephyr "Signature Series" solid compounds are the industry standard in metalworking. They are designed to quickly remove scratches and leave a surface that looks chrome-plated.
Each color has its meaning and abrasive grit. To avoid confusion, we have divided them into steps – from aggressive cutting to a mirror shine.
🟤 Brown "Tripoli" Compound (Primary Cutting)
Step 1: Coarse processing and preparation
This is the most popular initial compound for aluminum. If you have a tank or wheel that is oxidized or sanded (up to 400-600 grit), start with this.
- What it does: Aggressively "cuts" the metal, leveling the surface and removing oxidation.
- Materials: Aluminum, Brass, Copper.
- Recommended wheel: Orange or Yellow (Hard ventilated wheel).
- Result: A matte but smooth surface, ready for the next step.
🟢 Green "Chrome" Compound (Secondary Cut)
Step 2: Medium processing (Cutting + Shine)
The most versatile polishing compound. Often used as a "one-step for everything" for stainless steel or as a second step for aluminum after the brown compound.
- What it does: Removes traces left by the brown compound and begins to create a shine. It is slightly drier, which allows for a clearer reflection.
- Materials: Stainless Steel, Aluminum.
- Recommended wheel: Purple/Green or Yellow (Medium-hard wheel).
- Result: A very good shine, which many already consider a finish.
⚪ White "Chrome" Compound (Final Finish)
Step 3: Final processing and clarity
Once the surface is smooth, the white compound gives it the depth and clarity you see on new chrome-plated parts.
- What it does: A clean finish compound that practically no longer "cuts" the metal, but polishes the surface layer for maximum reflection.
- Materials: Aluminum, Stainless Steel.
- Recommended wheel: White or Blue (Soft wheel).
- Result: Bright, clear "OEM" level shine.
🔴 Red "Max Red" Compound (Ultra Finish)
Step 4: Show-level shine (Show Finish)
This is the "cherry on top". The red compound is for perfectionists. If you're preparing a car for a show or want to outshine your neighbor, this is your choice.
- What it does: Jewelers' quality compound that removes even the smallest "haze" or micro-scratches left by the white compound.
- Materials: All metals (Finish stage).
- Recommended wheel: Soft flannel wheel (untreated) or very soft ventilated wheel.
- Result: Flawless mirror shine without "holograms".
Expert tip on use (How-To):
For the metal polishing compound to work correctly:
- Don't burn it: Apply the compound to the rotating wheel for only 1-2 seconds. That's enough! Too much compound reduces efficiency ("clogs" the wheel).
- Heat is key: The compound contains wax/fats that must melt on the metal surface. Friction (heat) is what makes the compound work chemically.
- Cleanliness: Never use the same wheel for different compounds (e.g., don't mix brown with white). This will ruin the result.
